“That was my vision, just Christians mobilizing to good and do kindness,” says Reverand Shawn Morrison, Founder and Executive Director of Good in the ‘Hood. When Reverand Shawn started his organization in 2003, he served as the Evangelism Director for a local missionary training college. This experience led him to create the non-profit ministry, Good in the ‘Hood, where they help vulnerable communities through intentional kindness.

In the beginning, Reverend Shawn wasn’t sure of the proper programs and structure for his dream. He just knew he wanted to help people in need of God. Understanding that it’s the Holy Spirit that transforms people, not programs, Reverend Shawn focused on empathy to build the trust of others. Although Good in the ‘Hood is not a large organization, they do valuable work to aid struggling communities and successfully collaborate with their church partners.

Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyways for an inspiring conversation on running a non-profit ministry. Learn more about how Reverand Shawn started Good in the ‘Hood, prayer and encouragement’s role in moving him forward, and the importance of asking for advice.

Quotes:

• ”We use a kindness-based model where we brought intentional kindness. Romans chapter two, verse four was kind of the key verse there, which says, ‘The loving kindness of God leads to repentance.’ It’s a reconciling agent. And so we practice what we call low tension evangelism.” (03:49-04:05)

• “Good in the ‘Hood was like a speedboat. It could turn and pivot, and it was very nimble, where other organizations were bigger ships, but it was harder for them to do some of that intricate work. They weren’t as nimble to turn, but we could do that.” (11:00 – 11:15)

• “I constantly feel this anxiety over things, but I try not to let that move me so I’m not driven by emotion. I try the best I can through prayer and encouragement from others to stay on track with what I believe is the calling and vision of God.” (14:54 – 15:09)

• “The thing I’ve said to myself, and I believe is, God cares about the success of this ministry infinitely more than I do. So, I don’t have to feel the stress and the pressure. As I’ve grown, I’ve been able to relax a little bit more than in the beginning when I felt it was all on me, and I felt like I had to do for God rather than from God. And that’s a big difference. It’s not just semantics.” (20:15 – 20:41)

• “That was my vision, just Christians mobilizing to good and do kindness.” (27:48 – 27:53)

• “Recognize your limitations of what God has called you to do. What are the parameters of what you’re supposed to do? Don’t try and be bigger than you are, and don’t try to be too small and have false humility. What is God saying to you?” (34:11 – 34:25)

• “I ask advice all the time, even when I think I know the answer. And the reason for that is I am usually surprised by what I didn’t know. People give more than I expect, and they often get involved because they feel honored. So, that’s one of the secrets that we found is asking advice from people.” (35:50 – 36:08)
